Neighborhood Watch

The following steps outline the requirements for starting a neighborhood watch program:
Step 1
- Talk to your neighbors and friends. Ask for their participation in a small core group to take the first steps in starting a Neighborhood Watch Group.
- Explain the need for and value of a Neighborhood Watch Group.
- Define the boundaries of the area to be organized.
Step 2
- Contact your local law enforcement agencys Crime Prevention Officer.
- Discuss the size and boundaries of the area.
- Discuss the necessary paperwork and guideline.
Step 3
- Set a time and place for the meeting.
- The Crime Prevention Officer will assist in making a flyer for your meeting and arrange for an officer to attend.
- Select a block captain who will be responsible for organizing meetings and passing information to members.
- Recruit, recruit, recruit!
Crime Prevention Tips
- Be aware of activity on your street. Keep an eye on anyone going door-to-door.
- Watch for parked vehicles that do not belong in the neighborhood.
- Never open your door to anyone you do not know.
- Investigate (look outside) when you hear unusual sounds, barking dogs or when motion detector lights are triggered.
- Call the Police Department if you see anything suspicious.
