Burn Permit Information
A few friendly tips from your Fire Department: Know at least two ways out of your home in an emergency and practice them regularly with your family. When leaving a house that is smoky, crawl, and keep your face approximately 3" above the floor. That is where the air will be. Never leave an open flame unattended. Know the emergency numbers to call in your area. In Arroyo Grande call 911. Calling 473-5100 will connect you directly to the dispatch center for administrative matters. Keep matches and lighters away from children. Put them on a high shelf or in a locked cabinet. Make sure that there is at least one smoke detector on every level of your home, and that they are functioning at all times. NEVER run back into a burning or smoke filled building FOR ANY REASON. Remember, fire safety is everyone's responsibility! In an effort to comply with the desires of the community and the guidelines of the Air Pollution Control District (APCD), the following rules will govern open burning in the City of Arroyo Grande.
- Residents must obtain a valid burn permit from the Fire Department and have the permit available for inspection upon request. The permit fee is $100.00 and expires one year from the date of issuance.
- Burning shall be limited to natural wastes from shrubbery and trees grown on property occupied by one or two family dwellings only.
- Burning shall be allowed on properties of one acre or greater only.
- Burning may take place only between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
- Burning is permitted only on designated Arroyo Grande burn days (calendar attached). Prior to burning, all permit holders must contact the Air Pollution Control District at 800-834-2876 to verify that it is an APCD permissive burn day.
- Burning of grass, weeds, leaves or man made-waste is prohibited.
- Material shall be dry and reasonably free of surface moisture. No burning will be allowed if measurable rain has fallen.
- Piles of shrubbery and tree prunings shall be no larger than four (4) feet high and six (6) feet in diameter.
- Accelerant (e.g. flammable liquids) shall not be used to start burn piles.
- A responsible adult shall tend burn piles at all times and a functioning water hose capable of extinguishing the fire shall be available at all times.
- Burn piles shall be located a minimum of (50) feet from the property line of neighboring residences and a minimum of (30) feet from any structure, including wooden fences on the same property.
- Failure to follow these requirements is a violation of the Uniform Fire Code and the violator would be subject to penalties allowed under that Code.
