In January, the City Council renamed the the playground at Rancho Grande Park to the Mel Cottrell Playground. The City is honoring Mr. Cottrell at a Public Dedication Ceremony on Friday, November 1st at 3:30 PM.
Mel Cottrell has been a co-sponsor for special projects within City facilities and an active volunteer at Rancho Grande Park. In 2012, Mel and Jan Cottrell donated two shade structures at Rancho Grande park totaling over $23,000. Mel Cottrell has also made important contributions to the community through his volunteerism, particularly at Rancho Grande Park. For the last 13 years, Mel has volunteered at Rancho Grande Park picking up trash, cleaning and drying off playground equipment for children; cleaning the bathrooms before and after festivities at the park so that families have access to clean facilities, filled in gopher holes so that children do not trip, refilled doggie bags (and purchased) for park goers; and left notes for park patrons who have left behind toys, bikes, clothing and turned them in to the Recreation Services Department.
Mel Cottrell has consistently monitored park activity with an altruistic presence of care and responsibility for the safety of families and children.
The ceremony will take place at Rancho Grande Park on James Way in Arroyo Grande. The public is welcomed and encouraged to attend.
