The January 9th storm event has impacted many City residents and businesses. City staff have been working around the clock to assess the damage caused in the City, prepare for additional rain events, and provide information on resources available to those affected.
A number of homes on Tally Ho Road have been severely impacted by the storm. Five Cities Fire personnel were called to the area early in the day on January 9th and assisted residents with safety information. City representatives from the Community Development and Public Works Departments then visited each of the affected homes on Tally Ho Road. Upon making direct contact with homeowners and residents present at the time, City staff ensured they had alternative shelter, provided additional City resources information, and safety tips, such as shutting off the power and gas where necessary.
In consultation with the City’s Building Official, staff returned in the late afternoon/evening on January 9th to contact available residents and provide tags for unsafe conditions such as swamped electrical systems. The next morning, Tuesday January 10th, City staff returned and talked with several residents about additional resources for disaster recovery such as Readyslo.org, and to let them know that the City’s Building Official would be returning in the afternoon to do preliminary inspections. The Building Official completed preliminary inspections on Tuesday afternoon. City staff have visited the neighborhood regularly throughout the storm events this week and continue to do so through the weekend. Some homeowners have begun the permitting process necessary with the City to address the flooding damage to homes. Information regarding resources have been posted to the City’s website and are available through Readyslo.org.
City staff recognize this is an immensely difficult time for residents. A City liaison will be in place no later than Tuesday, specifically for those impacted by the storm event, to act as the conduit of information to and from the affected homeowners on Tally Ho. City staff are currently working to coordinate services to the area such as waste hauling and are available to assist with information and services that may be needed for the rehabilitation process.
In addition to Red Cross assistance and sheltering options, services are available through the 5 Cities Homeless Coalition (5CHC) to assist residents who have been displaced from the storm. 5CHC has begun a fundraising effort to help residents and homeowners in the South County. Please find the link to donate to 5CHC assistance to residents as follows: https://5chc.org/?form=FUNERMYAJBR . Nevada Street temporary closure.
Reopened at 3:40pm with localized coned off area in the street.
After evaluation and video analysis no sinkhole conditions found. The cause was found to be shallow surface drainage underneath the asphalt causing structural pavement damages. The large volume of storm water drainage undermined sections of private property and went underground and under the street. Curbing of the drainage at 2 locations and filling and patching the asphalt will be done over the coming weeks.
