Nixle Notifications can be sent for a wide variety of reasons. Some of those reasons include emergency evacuation as a result of a natural or man-made disaster such as fire, flood, chemical or biological incident; incidents in which an evacuation would reduce the likelihood of injury or death, e.g. a barricaded suspect or hostage incident; and incidents in which timely notification may result in the safe return of a missing child or at risk adult. Other possible reasons for notification include information about major road closures, detours around construction or public events and more.

When it is determined that a Nixlie Notification is to be sent, the Arroyo Grande Police Department 9-1-1 Communication Center creates the message and assigns one of four priority levels; Alert (emergency type alert), Advisory (less urgent need-to-know information), Community Information (day-to-day neighborhood to community-level information), or Traffic (very localized traffic information). The message is then targeted to a specific geographic region ranging from an individual neighborhood area to the entire city or surrounding region. When the message is sent it is immediately available for anyone to see on the Nixle web site. Residents who have created an account with Nixle will also immediately receive the notification via text message and/or email based upon their account setup, registered locations and preferences.

The Nixle Notification service is secure, private and best of all, is free. To create an account and register your location and contact information go to www.nixle.com.
